Much of the city's development has followed the growth of Stanford University. Menlo Park was incorporated as a city in 1927 and in the mid-20th century, Stanford University faculty and graduates began establishing electronics companies in the area. This laid the foundation for what would become Silicon Valley. In 1972, Kleiner Perkins became the first venture capital firm to establish an office on Sand Hill Road. Their success quickly drew more venture capitalist firms to the now infamous road. In 1998, Google was founded in a Menlo Park garage by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Stanford students. Meta has had its headquarters in Menlo Park since 2011.
